There’s nothing in the report you linked to that supports your comment that zero will lead to economic and social ruin. Quite the contrary, the report supports netzero and discusses ways to achieve that acknowledging the challenges that society will face.
No beef, no lamb, no shipping, no flying, no cement for construction, no steel, no plastics, vastly reduced road travelling in all-electric vehicles which will be in short supply because of constraints on the grid and lack of rare earths, a weather dependent 100% renewables electric grid which will need to supply all transportation and domestic energy use. It's pie-in-the-sky but if it were achievable it would be a dystopian nightmare of national impoverishment and loss of freedoms.
Versus the dystopian world of the likely collapse of the AMOC, the collapse of world agriculture, sea level rise forcing the evacuation of major world cities, many cities unlivable with wet bulb temperatures high enough to cause death from being outdoors and on and on and on.
