Here’s the whole quote with a lovely photo of the majestic beast himself:
Attributed to Augustine of Hippo, described thus:
St. Augustine (born November 13, 354, Tagaste, Numidia [now Souk Ahras, Algeria]—died August 28, 430, Hippo Regius [now Annaba, Algeria]; feast day August 28) bishop of Hippo from 396 to 430, one of the Latin Fathers of the Church and perhaps the most significant Christian thinker after St. Paul. Augustine’s adaptation of classical thought to Christian teaching created a theological system of great power and lasting influence.
Our venerable Saint chose the Lion as his symbol of truth, not the Hippo, even though he was Bishop of the place. Understandable. Lions have a majesty which hippos can’t quite match, despite their unrivalled ferocious reputation for seeing off all comers. But what all those nice annotated photos of St Augustine’s famous quote do not show you is the pack of squabbling hyenas in the background making so much damn noise that they even drown out the roar of Felis Leo himself. In particular, I refer to the long comment threads on these two recent articles regarding the controversy surrounding the authenticity and/or usefulness of the New Zealnd whistleblower data.
Will the ‘truthers’ and the side-takers and the j’accuse ‘controlled opposition’ mob just pipe down please, because nothing can be proved either way along those lines. In my no doubt very simplistic assessment, the crux of the issue comes down to this, having read Dr Ah Kahn Syed’s questions to Steve:
Did Steve correctly employ a published UKHSA time series cohort methodology or not in order to come to his conclusions about the NZWBD?
I'm not an expert so I can't say yes or no and as far as I can see that question is still open, so please can the experts do their best to enlighten us, then we can move on swiftly from this unwelcome and divisive distraction and concentrate on the wider issues - then our Lion might be able to get a roar in edgeways hopefully.
Lions are lazy. Lionesses do all the hunting and ensures the pride continues. Lions kill other lions and kill the offspring of other lions born in their pride. There are many reasons to find a better quote on how truth prevails. However, I do love the photo and love lions. Nature lives by rules I have little ability to comprehend.
Hello. From his post I can say that Steve presents a nothing burgher, though i can't say about the actual data he uses.
He presents 10 years or so of overall mortality- ie number of deaths but they are not adjusted for increase in population size nor age, the old are more likely to die-so deaths will always go up in an increasing and aging population.
His second bit about deaths by month after vaccine lot is bizarre. He doesn't say which months they refer to, and presumably deaths increase in the winter, nor make any comparisons to deaths without vaccine or after different lots in those same months. Perhaps they were less?
