It’s a painful awakening for me. I’ve always been immensely proud of my British (and part German) heritage. I’ve looked at the Industrial Revolution and the British Empire largely positively, for its indisputable global benefits in lifting billions out of extreme poverty and in spreading democracy around the globe. But there’s a dark side which I am increasingly becoming aware of and which needs to be exposed if we are to ever fully comprehend what’s been happening in our world, here in the 21st century, and particularly throughout the 20th century, with its numerous regional conflicts, technological and social revolutions, genocides and two world wars.
