Yesterday, I read this post from long time climate change sceptic/realist Willis Eschenbach. He says: It’s my 76th birthday today, so for fun I thought I’d test the capabilities of the latest Artificial Intelligence sensation, ChatGPT. And if that doesn’t convince you that Artificial Intelligence absolutely implies the existence of Artificial Stupidity, nothing will.
Thinking of AI accumulating knowledge. I've seen YouTubers promoting an online counselling platform where you can either talk wo someone or use the written chat format. This would be a wealth of information to harvest!
Who really 'understands' facts? Is it more the case that we simply arrange them into complex interacting patterns which make sense of reality as we perceive it? If some machine figures out how the human brain is able to do this, then what will be the consequence of that? I don't know, but it does concern me.
It was intimidating to learn that the chess programme Deep Blue beat the then World Champion at chess, but then you realise that a human wrote the programning anyway.
They do not need it to be as able as they say, only that we believe it is. Just like PCR “test” and masks. They can not do as we are told they can, yet the PCR was trusted by enough to cause lockdowns and all the rest. Masks have long been known to be ineffective against viruses and to be unhealthy if misused or over used. Yet, enough beloved in their efficacy to force most of humanity to wear them despite their obvious harms.
I believe that id the purpose behind these glowing reports on the accuracy of AI. It is too convince enough in the lie of its abilities so that they surrender to it as they did over PCR and Masks. Vaccines too, if we want to include those as well.
That is also a possibility. Hollywood have been plying us with the 'machine becomes self-aware' meme for years now. It's ingrained in our consciousness, part of our predictive programming. Still, I'm not so sure it's a good idea to take the bait and prove that AI is more stupid and far less capable than certain actors would have us believe. We're stuck between two paradigms: AI is potentially going to take over the world and make humanity redundant: AI is nowhere near as frightening and dangerous as the elite (and some people defending humanity) would have us believe. The upshot is we are left in a confused state of fear and apprehension, waiting for the real AI to step forward, in the form of the all-conquering evil overlord or the naked emperor.
I believe a a third possibility. It is neither the overlord nor the naked emperor. It is merely a tool used to control humanity. As the PCR “test” was held up to have capabilities it does not and its results used as inflatable proof that we needed to be locked down and all the rest, AI too will be universally reported upon as infallible and used to legitimize whatever horrors our rulers choose to subject us too. It is like a blank page in a blank book that only the anointed can read and all must obey. It’s actual capabilities, heck, ever its actual existence doesn’t matter as long as enough believe in it. That’s my take, for what ever it is worth.

It's been renamed ChatCNN.
AI devices may have almost unlimited capability to "know" facts, but as to understanding them, I suspect that is a different matter altogether.
And, as Willis Eschenbach found out, it is highly likely they will reflect the biases of their creators.

...But I did hear that a computer cannot beat a (champion) human at backgammon... interesting
Our physical needs as humans are pretty simple - we need to remember this! We get stressed about so many unimportant things... :-(

I believe we are in grave danger.
An excellent point KMC!
