Our local bonfire night has been put on by the local Rotary club since I was a child, and relied on donations from the public to keep going. Spiralling insurance costs however are leaving it on the brink each year. People don't realise how much these public displays cost. The green posturing is pathetic but I understand the concern about costs.
As it happens I agree that councils should not be funding bonfire night fireworks. This is absolutely not within the necessary or reasonable remit of local government; the appetite of the public for such events can comfortably be met privately, eg by local schools for which it provides a useful fund raising opportunity alongside a jolly social event. Councils should stick to clearing the drains which haven’t been done outside my house for years, relying on residents like me to do it. No bread & circuses!
The carbon neutral posturing of the council as its reasoning is however totally b*ll**ks.
When they save money by cancelling the fireworks, you can be sure that they won't be fixing more potholes or clearing more drains and you can be sure that your council tax bill won't be going down!
I thought that a well controlled public bonfire was preferable to lots of private ones all over the place, in the cause of safety. Save the cost of the police and, fire brigade and ambulance service and many injuries.
Well exactly! That's why I suggested collecting Korans instead. They could even be put into eco-friendly, low emissions sacks in order to appease the Greens and the wood for the bonfire could all be sustainable and/or recycled.
Guy Fawkes Night was long ago highjacked by the American Halloween down our way. There are some fireworks around 5 Nov, but they’re called Festival of Lights or Autumn Lights Festival. I haven’t been asked penny for the guy for decades.
Yes, I know, all this stupid American 'trick or treat' lark from kids nowadays. Probably won't be long before doorstep Christmas carols go the same way as penny for the guy.

On that you are absolutely right!
Our culture and traditions are being diluted on purpose so we lose our national identity!!!
I think the people of Nottingham need to build massive bonfires all over the city and smoke out this DEI appointed so called “leader”!!!
Until the plebs wake up to this nonsense and start saying “NO” it will continue to happen!!

That's because it's not about saving money, it's about ignoring/erasing traditions and customs.
Too true.
But, but, but, what about diversity?

LoL
Except, except, such a suggestion, if made public, would bring out the hordes of Ms. Khan’s supporters screaming for justice and retribution.
Well, there is that.

All green policies are anti-human.
So is Sharia Law.
Chortle, chortle!
