I remember reading about a type of heat pump that actually might make sense in this country, but the government refused to licence it as it was "only" about 60% efficient and they were only interested in near 100% efficiency even if it doesn't do the job properly.

Whaaaaaat? That is utterly ludicrous! The two systems aren't even compatible. How much is that going to cost? Ffs what alternate universe does Minibrain live in? Has he declared his conflicts of interest yet, with his brother benefitting from government contracts? No? Sack him. We worked out a sodding heat pump alone was gonna cost 60 grand to install, but we don't have a suitable outside wall - too close to our neighbours. According to our plumber mate, they only work well in new builds with underfloor heating. Honestly, I give it until January before he does a complete u turn on this and realises we have to keep using North Sea oil and gas.....he's come this far 🤣

Well for me a 80 year old who has either to eat or heat where am I supposed to get that kind of money as our basic pension won’t cover that. Honestly we have an insane government and I’m sick to the teeth of them as they throw money away to Ukraine by the millions and throw millions to Isreal, they pay for illegal immigration’s by putting them up in posh hotels give them mobile phones money. Sickening I’m utterly disgusted

The United Kingdom is in serious dire straits with their idiotic, woke governments…I don’t see a way out before it goes exponentially worse. The USA has a long way to dig out of the damage wrought by decades of purposeful rot yet the UK seems to be teetering on the brink.

I should just point out that even with a gas absorption heat pump, you will still need a hot water tank, so it doesn't solve the space problem, but the Robur K18 is designed for an option to control an additional gas boiler if hot water on demand is required. The government's plan is to install two completely separate systems - an electric heat pump and a gas boiler. Also, with an absorption heat pump, you won't need to fit expensive new radiators.

You also need a whacking great tank to store your LPG. we've holidayed in a few Cornish properties using LPG all had massive tanks in the garden for LPG storage.

Yes, you'd need a fair sized garden too, but on average, if you're not on mains gas, then you're most likely to be living in a rural area where you do have a garden.

I have a wood burner too, but these days you need to be very careful about the price.

Occasionally I get lucky and happen across a tree being felled and fill my boots, but it’s at least a year seasoning before I can use it, and that does take a lot of space.

Commercial logs are wicked expensive

I live rurally off the gas grid and heat with LPG.

I don’t have a massive tank, just 2 cylinders in an outside cupboard.

I use about 10/11 of them a year, and the gas company changes them for me, I’m a bit too old to be lugging cylinders around.

I have a 3 bed semi.

We used to use propane cylinders for heating and hot water. Got through maybe 3 or 4 in a year in a static! But we did have a woodburner.

You can't expect members of the government to understand anything more complicated than filling in their expense application forms.
