Most people never do basic research on the Dalai Lama because they are looking for warm, fuzzy, Oprah-delivered justification for their lack of values.

The Dalai Lama was not even Tibetan. He was born in China and had Mao's influence wrapped around him from an early age. Mao referred to the young Dalai Lama as his son. Then the Dalai Lama went to Tibet and started to preach the Chinese as Tibet's new overlords. It wasn't even subtle. He publicly invited the red army into Tibet. You can find reports of it in the CIA reading room.

Once out of Tibet, the Dalai Lama had other Lamas trained by the CIA at a camp in Colorado. They were parachuted back into Tibet to win it back. Of course, they were slaughtered. And that's how the Dalai Lama eliminated the Tibetan lamas.

Romantic tale, no?

Enlightening. I never figured the Dalai Lama as one of the good guys but had no idea about how potentially bad he might be. Like most, I bought into the myth that Tibet was a spiritually enlightened utopia before the brutal Chinese communists invaded. I watched Seven Years in Tibet! Ironic: Little boys having an audience with His Holiness now don't have to wear masks - all the better for kissing them. Learning that he was also a salesman for AstraZeneca in India is appalling, as bad as Her Majesty the Queen being the same in the UK.

I think this is an important message, because we can't afford the illusion that someone is coming to save us - we have to take responsibility, collectively and individually, for saving outselves.

If there was one benefit of covid, it exposed everyone for who they really are. No more hiding.
