My untutored layman explanation is that the fall in UK wind speeds coincides with the warm phase of the 60 to 70 year cycle of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. Contrary to climate alarmist fearmongering, warmer temperatures result in reduced UK windiness and storminess due to the reduced pressure differences with the equitorial South. Compare with the LIA when UK storms were much worse than now. Expect UK wind speeds to pick up when we get into the impending cold phases of the AMO and GSM.
