I would have thought the edge corresponded to land vs sea boundary as the warm moist tropical water off the coast would create this cloud formation with its interaction with the cold front after night helps still strong winds over the earth.

Why is the line at such an angle? I would expect it to be parallel to longitude?

Tilt of the earth's spin axis relative to the plane of the earth's orbit around the sun. Lower northern latitudes see sunrise slightly earlier in winter than higher latitudes.
