Met Office Chief Claims 'It is virtually impossible for the UK to experience 40C in an undisrupted climate'
Well, they did it; they scraped 40.3C in Coningsby, 40.2C at St James’s Park and Heathrow, 40.1 at Kew Gardens and the magic 40C at Northolt. They’re very happy, because the previous decidedly dodgy record of 38.7C supposedly set at Cambridge Botanic Gardens in July 2019 has been blown away across the country and we are now definitely in the terrifying new climate where never before seen high temperatures are becoming routine in the UK. And it’s CO2 wot dunnit.
Strangely though, in 1932, the Daily Standard was reporting 39C in London, but this doesn’t count because it’s not official.
1911 summer was very hot too. Thousands actually died, because the heat was relentless for 2 months. 1976 was exceptionally prolonged - about 10 days when the temperature exceeded 32C somewhere in the UK. It started June and finished at the end of August, by which time the UK looked like scorched earth, it was so hot and dry. Not like now. 2 very hot days, one record-breakingly hot and as soon as the records were broken, it started cooling very rapidly and we’ll be back to a normal British summer for the foreseeable, starting this evening. The climate activist arsonists have hardly had time to light their blazes before downpours will extinguish them. So they’re sticking to breaking glass and vandalising paintings mainly.
John Hammond, ‘weather forecaster’, was predicting thousands of death from this heatwave. It’s over now. How many people died, Mr Hammond?
So, Belcher reckons that ‘Met office researchers’ (I think I can guess who) can demonstrate that 40C in the UK is virtually impossible in a climate not supercharged by man-made greenhouse gases. I want to see that ‘research’.
It’s by Christidis, of course, the man who gave us the risible Pakistan/India heatwave attribution, which I wrote about here.
On the current 40C threshold now breached in the UK, Christidis says:
Is this due to climate change?
“We hoped we wouldn’t get to this situation but for the first time ever we are forecasting greater than 40°C in the UK, climate attribution scientist at the Met Office, Dr Nikos Christidis, said. In a recent study we found that the likelihood of extremely hot days in the UK has been increasing and will continue to do so during the course of the century”.
“Climate change has already influenced the likelihood of temperature extremes in the UK. The chances of seeing 40°C days in the UK could be as much as 10 times more likely in the current climate than under a natural climate unaffected by human influence. The likelihood of exceeding 40°C anywhere in the UK in a given year has also been rapidly increasing, and, even with current pledges on emissions reductions, such extremes could be taking place every 15 years in the climate of 2100.”
Extreme heat events do occur within natural climate variation due to changes in global weather patterns. However, the increase in the frequency, duration, and intensity of these events over recent decades is clearly linked to the observed warming of the planet and can be attributed to human activity.

Bloody disingenuous for a start. “We hoped we wouldn’t get to this situation . . . . . “ Like hell did they! The Met Office climate alarmists have been gagging to record 40C somewhere in the UK so they can push their WEF sponsored climate change/climate action agenda even harder, using hot weather as the excuse to do so. We won’t bloody well hear the last of this, that’s for sure. They’ll probably still be telling us about it, even as we’re freezing out vitals off this winter in homes we can’t afford to heat.
No doubt we’ll be treated to headlines of ‘Climate change caused 40C heatwave in UK’, ‘40C heatwave impossible without climate change’, etc. in the next week or so, as the alarmists and the nudge merchants make hay while the sun shines. I’ll be back to comment on their squalid efforts to try and ‘prove’ that your car and your gas boiler is responsible for it being hot today.
