This is just too funny. Hard-nosed sceptical Scots, who have been used to extreme weather for hundreds of years, react with undisguised cynicism to suggestions by ‘experts’ that Storm Babet is the harbinger of future climate change doom and that Scots should ‘get used’ to weather conditions which they have been accustomed to for millennia!
Experts have warned Scotland better get used to extreme weather events like Storm Babet as climate change ramps up.
Scots scientists told the Record the storm is a taste of things to come - insisting these types of events “are going to keep happening” without emissions curbs.
Scientists have long warned climate change will not only make our world hotter but wetter too, thanks to warmer, moister air that will make heavy rain more intense and frequent.
Storm Babet has battered and overwhelmed flood defences in parts of Scotland like Brechin - with one month’s rainfall dumped in one night in some areas in the north-east.
And it came just weeks after Storm Agnes, the first of the UK winter season, battered parts of the country with 70mph winds.
That’s sparked fresh calls for ministers to reinforce “climate adaptation” measures to defend against the “Scottish monsoon”, including bolstering flood dams and walls, infrastructure and the sewage system.
Aye, beware the ‘Scottish monsoon’ laddie!
Here’s what those actual ‘experts’ are saying:
Prof Simon Tett, a climate scientist at Edinburgh University, said: “Because of climate change, the atmosphere is warmer than it would have been without climate change.
“And that means it can hold more water… because of climate change, we get more rain.”
And he warned the probability has increased of rain exceeding “critical thresholds” that flood defences can’t handle - as has happened in towns like Brechin in Angus - posing a risk to life or permanent damage to buildings.
Prof Tett added the problem would only get worse for as long as global temperatures rise, saying: “That’s why zero carbon matters.”
He added: “These events are going to keep happening.
"Scotland needs to both reduce its CO2 emissions as part of its contribution to the global good and also prepare for the changing climate.
“And it's changing - it’s changing now, over people's lifetimes.”
The predictable old chestnut of ‘warmer atmosphere holds more water’ which I mentioned in my previous post. These ‘experts’ are so predictable and so yawningly boring:
Then Rebecca ‘expert’ wades in with this nonsense:
Dr Rebecca Wade, an environmental scientist at Abertay University in Dundee, has been monitoring the high flow conditions around Tayside.
Asked if Scots should expect more events like Storm Babet in future, she told the Record: “Yes – That is exactly what is expected. We will get more rainfall and the pattern of rainfall will change – meaning that rain storms may be more intense, exactly as we have seen with Storm Babet.”
Dr Wade added: “It’s not just us in Scotland who are experiencing these changes in weather and storm severity.
“This is a global issue and the impacts are being felt all around the world. That’s why international agreements and targets for reducing carbon emissions are so important. We all have a role to play in reducing our climate impacts.
“And at the same time we need to respond to the changes that are already ‘locked in’ to our climate system.”
To misquote a certain Michael Crichton, as soon as you see the words ‘environmental scientist’, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had. Finally, Claire of the Met Office tops the soul-crushing stupidity with this comment:
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said: "When you see what's happening across the world, all these rainfall events which seem to be more frequent and more intense, the amount of rainfall which has actually been held in the atmosphere and falling on one place, it really pretty much is unprecedented.
“And time and time again, the conclusion is: it's climate change, it’s here, it’s a clear and present danger.”
Scots are having none of it, quite rightly. Here’s just a small selection of a long list of critical comments:
Climate change? For a regular occurrence? The Rest and be Thankful gets landslides Annually because of it. Check and see... The same weather patters have been hitting Scotland for years. Now the temperature will drop and it will get cold but freeze after Bonfire night......
Oh here we go, another round of green taxes and raised insurance premiums.
Don't fall for it people! This storm isn't a patch on past ones - nothing but lies, lies and more lies to push their agenda!
Extreme weather is being ruthlessly exploited to promote the Net Zero agenda, by the press, by politicians and by moronic ‘experts’. We have to push back - hard.
Paul Homewood has comprehensively debunked the absurd claim by Sky News that Storm Babet was caused by “climate change”, which nowadays is taken to man-made climate change (or just climate change!). He ends with “Quite how Sky News can get away with publishing lies like this without being censured by OFCOM is a mystery”: https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2023/10/22/sky-blame-babet-floods-on-climate-change/.
These climate liars have actually got their propaganda the wrong way round as history shows that weather conditions during the Little Ice Age were far worse than today (or would be in their dreaded warmer future). That is exactly as would be expected scientifically due to the strengthened thermal gradients which then prevailed across the then colder UK latitudes.
Paul has posted extensively on the work of meteorologist HH Lamb who studied and recorded the adverse weather of the past, see https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2015/11/16/hh-lamb-the-great-storms-of-the-little-ice-age/. A search of his website for “little ice age” brings up a trove of further posts on the fierce storms and extreme weather of that time.
The worst part of the "climate" fraud isn't what it forces us to do. The worst part is that the fraud PREVENTS us from adapting to bad weather patterns.
FDR faced a bad weather pattern, droughts in some places and floods in others. 1938 was a year of EXTREME floods and hurricanes.

His administration masterfully dealt with the drought by building windbreaks and training farmers. The New Deal adapted to the floods by building hydroelectric dams, controlling the rivers and advancing industry all at once.

Now we create floods to allegedly control tiny parts per million of "pollution", and we tear down dams to make everyone more vulnerable and eliminate electric power.
